I am not a 'one episode a night' kind of girl. I'm a 'watches one episode, gets emotionally attached to the characters and finishes it in a week' kind of girl and I hold no shame about that fact. Here's a list of my favourite TV series to start binge-watching during lockdown because you don't have to feel guilty for clicking that 'yes I'm still watching' button on Netflix every day.
Greys Anatomy
Made up of 16 seasons and 363 episodes, this is the definition of a long-running series! It follows a group of doctors working in Seattle with Meredith Grey acting as the glue that links all other characters to each other. The lives of the surgical interns and supervisors are messily intertwined and it's jam packed with drama, tears, friendship and love. You will find yourself saying 'just one more' after each episode so I hope you have the tissues and willpower at the ready. I haven't actually watched season 16 yet because it's not on Amazon Prime so no spoilers please!
See
Jason Mamoa returns to our screens to play Baba Voss in his classic role of alpha but uncharacteristically in the role of protective father. This 8 episode series is set in a dystopian future where mankind has lost its sight many years ago and had to find new ways to survive. Baba Voss helps the Alkenny tribe to survive and hide from an enemy that wants to capture his two children who were born with vision. This is one of my favourite series I have watched in years because it is so beautifully set and the story is phenomenal. It's pretty gruesome which isn't usually my vibe but I feel like it's justified in this plot and it brings tension and raw emotion in the right places.
The Last Kingdom
This series is all about the war between Vikings and the Saxons. The main character Uhtred was born as a Saxon but after the Vikings murdered his father, they raise him as one of their own. I was surprised by how quickly we get thrown into the drama, barely before we can establish our feelings and connections towards the characters. The 4 seasons follows the struggle of the two sides of Uhtred. I usually become attached to the love stories (classic me) but what I love most about this series is the complicated relationship between Uhtred and King Alfred. If Viking bearded kind of men are your type then this is most definitely the show for you!
Jane the Virgin
I finished this series in 3 weeks. The 100 episodes follow Jane, a Latina virgin (although she has a boyfriend) who was accidentally inseminated with another man's sperm. Jane tries to navigate this crazy situation but drama follows her everywhere. Honestly, it's pretty random at times but it's hilarious and heartwarming. The magical realism elements of this series is what makes it so unique and lovely. I often have it on in the background whilst I do my makeup or tidy my room.
The Vampire Diaries / The Originals
The plot follows Elena Gilbert having just lost both of her parents in a car accident, fall in love with a vampire called Stefan. Elena and her friends and family must navigate their lives through many supernatural threats. It's impossible not to become invested in these characters and you ultimately must decide, are you team Stefan or team Damon? The Originals is a spin off of The Vampire Diaries if you become super invested like me.
Killing Eve
This story follows Eve (Sandra Oh) an MI6 agent on the hunt for a beautiful psychopathic assassin called Villanelle (Jodie Comer). The two women become bound by their obsession with each other in a twisted kind of love story. Jodie Comer is absolutely phenomenal and it's hard to explain how fab she plays this role so head to BBC Iplayer and see for yourself.
Peaky Blinders
This is about a gangster family set in Birmingham post WW1. The head of the family, Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) has ambitious plans for his family and their business, which reveals many enemies. If I'm being totally honest, the last couple of seasons aren't as great but still worth a watch!
Frontier
This series follows Declan Harp (Jason Mamoa, again) a notorious fearless and bloody leader on the hunt to make money in the fur trade of North America in the 1700s. It's a compelling adventure of people fighting for power and wealth often with no real morals. The characters are complex and the story goes far beyond Harp.
Gossip Girl
This long running series follows the rich kids of New York. It's 6 seasons of turbulent, complicated relationships between friends, lovers, parents and their children. The main characters lives are exposed from the blog of Gossip Girl, the all-knowing anonymous online identity. All the characters are mysteriously intertwined and you're in for a real adventure discovering how! A fabulous teen drama!
The O.C.
My elder siblings watched this and they introduced me when I was about 15. This is the OG teenage drama series that set the bar for all to follow! It's about a troubled teen called Ryan who is taken in by his wealthy lawyer, his wife and their son Seth who quickly become a family. They deal with life in the upper class of Newport Beach. If you watch any of these series - I hope it's this one!
Gilmore Girls
I'm currently binge watching Gilmore Girls - it's such an easy watch! It's a feel good series about a mother and daughter duo in a little American town. There is a dose of drama and heartbreak but it's mainly upbeat and plain old lovely. I literally watch it every second of the day and never get bored.
